In the movie 8 Mile, there is a visceral scene where Eminem’s character, B-Rabbit, stands over a bathroom sink and vomits right before a high-stakes rap battle. We usually just call that "nerves," but it is actually a perfect look at a biological survival mechanism. In that moment, his body wasn’t just anxious. It was literally fighting for its life.

Most of us aren’t stepping into a rap battle today, but our bodies are often locked in that same gut-wrenching state. Between "tech neck" and sitting at a desk for eight hours a day, we are constantly signaling to our brains that we are under threat. To find our way back to health, we have to understand that our nervous system is like a biological seesaw, and most of us are stuck on the wrong side.

Your health is driven by the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS). It is divided into two primary branches: the Sympathetic (fight or flight) and the Parasympathetic (rest and digest).

These two systems have a strict inverse relationship. When one is up, the other must be down. They cannot both dominate at the same time. The most important link between your spine and your stress level lies in a concept called subluxation. When a vertebra becomes misaligned, it puts direct pressure on a nerve. In an act of biological intelligence, your body attempts to protect that nerve by pulling itself into flexion.

Flexion is the act of slumping, rounding the shoulders, and collapsing the chest. It is essentially a standing fetal position. It is an instinctual move of protection designed to shield your vital organs. However, in our modern lifestyle, we spend all day in this slumped position at our computers. This physical state of protection comes with a devastating chemical price tag. When the sympathetic nervous system is dominant, your body floods with cortisol. While necessary for short-term survival, chronic cortisol acts as a chemical hijacker.

High levels of cortisol do not just make you feel edgy. They actively kill off your body's production of happy hormones. Specifically, cortisol suppresses:

  • Serotonin: Your primary mood stabilizer and happiness chemical.
  • Melatonin: The essential hormone for deep, restorative sleep.
  • Dopamine: The chemical driver for reward, motivation, and focus.

This is why you cannot simply supplement your way out of a bad mood or a sleepless night. If your spine is stuck in a state of flexion, your brain will continue to pump out cortisol, effectively neutralizing any serotonin or melatonin you try to produce.
